Through Southampton University I have been doing my first online course, with three weeks of enjoyment reading about the Duke of Wellington and the Battle of Waterloo from their original sources. Short video sessions showing a discussion between four distinguished historians provided stimulus around disputed topics. Participants were encouraged to make comments online and join in the discussions.
We didn’t all agree! There were lots of ideas put forward and other participants included extra links and book references. I was amazed at the depth of knowledge of some of the group. When some put forward questions, or requests for further information, others wrote in with more information or gave ideas where to look. There were maps and animations that made the battle strategy clear. Now we all have a list of books for further reading, if we have the time!
The course remains online and available so anyone can do this course and take as long as they need to complete it. Coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, it brought this complex period of history to life. I learnt so much more and thoroughly enjoyed my time.
